France drawings August 2015

Did some drawings in France. A combination of beautiful surroundings, time and visiting great museums.

Museums

  • In Avignon the newly opened Institut de L’art Contemporain), Avignon, Musee Calvet
  • In Arles the newly opened Vincent Van Gogh Fondation – exhibition of his drawings
  • In Aix en Provence Musee Granet – very wide collection, also exhibition of US art including Diebenkorn
  • In Montelimar Musee de l’art contemporain – a local museum but this year with a major exhibition of prints from Braque, Miro, Tal Coat and many more drawn from the Fondation Maeght Collection.

Drawings
Some based in Avignon –  parks, river banks. Also two drawings linked to sites painted by artists – Van Gogh’s bridge near Arles, we’ve been there before, on the edge of an industrial area, strangely beautiful and peaceful. The other a sketch of Cezanne’s Mont St Victoire – done from the hill nearly his studio near Aix en Provence.

Other drawings later on based in the countryside of the Drome, got rather obsessed with mountains and cliffs.

I drew lots of different things just getting pleasure from drawing real things, out in the open, quickly. On some of them did a bit of additional stuff but most of it there and then.

Nearly all in a small A5 sketch book opened out to A4, mostly with charcoal.

Took a large sketchbook and did the collages in that on a very rainy couple of days. Found a great art shop in Avignon, a home from home, went there three times.
