Thinking about colour

I’ve been working in charcoal for the last year, creating complex layered drawings. In the last few weeks I’ve been revisiting some of my drawings, using them to create a basic framework and using splashes of colour.

After a year of working in monotone when I visit a gallery I am almost hypnotically drawn to black and white drawings and paintings. It’s like they are calling out to me.

But on the other hand I am remembering the luxuriousness of colour, blending colours, layers of colour. I’ve still been using charcoal, but also white chalk and tempura paint which I find suits working with charcoal.

Three pieces of work – basically ‘from the train’
